The best time to visit Thailand with kids, month by month
For most families the best time is the cool season, mid-October to mid-February, when Bangkok, the north and the east coast are at their most comfortable. Two exceptions: Koh Samui and the southern Gulf coast stay rainy until about December, and the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is wettest from May to October.

What are Thailand's seasons?
The Thai Meteorological Department divides the year into three seasons. They describe the center, north and northeast well; the south follows its own monsoon pattern, covered below.

How do the seasons differ by region?
Thailand is long from north to south, and its two coasts get their heaviest rain at different times. The south stays wet until about December, and the Gulf side, including Koh Samui, gets more rain than the Andaman side, peaking around October to December under the northeast monsoon. The Andaman side, with Phuket and Krabi, is wettest during the southwest monsoon from May to October.

Where should you go in the school holidays?
If your dates are fixed by school, pick the region to fit the month rather than the other way round. The two coasts help: when one is in its rainy peak, the other usually is not.

Which festivals are fun with children?
Songkran (Thai New Year): 13–15 April
Songkran is the Thai New Year, celebrated with water: people splash each other in the streets, and children love the water pistols. In 2026 the official holiday ran from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 April; for 2027 the traditional dates are 13–15 April, but the official holiday list has not yet been published.
- Give toddlers a quiet spot to watch from; being soaked by strangers can scare them.
- Put phones and passports in waterproof pouches, and dress children in quick-drying clothes.
- Expect busy roads and full transport around the holiday; book transfers early.
Loy Krathong: 24 November 2026, 13 November 2027
On the full-moon night of the twelfth lunar month, people float small decorated baskets called krathongs on rivers, canals and ponds. It falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026 and Saturday 13 November 2027. Children enjoy making or choosing a krathong; waterfronts get crowded after dark, so hold small hands near the water.
December 2026 in Bangkok
Queen Sirikit's royal cremation is scheduled for 15–19 December 2026 at Sanam Luang, next to the Grand Palace. Closures around those dates have not been announced; if the Grand Palace is on your list, check its official schedule before you go.
Is the rainy season a bad time for a family trip?
Not necessarily. Many families travel in the rainy season because of school holidays, and it can work well with the right expectations.

What is the best month to visit Thailand with kids?
For a first trip covering Bangkok, the north or the east coast, November to January is the most comfortable, inside the cool season from mid-October to mid-February. For Koh Samui, wait until after the October–December rains; for Phuket and Krabi, avoid May to October.
Is it too hot for toddlers in April?
April is in the hot season (mid-February to mid-May), and it is the month many parents find hardest. It works if you plan beach or pool mornings, rest indoors in the middle of the day and keep drives short; Songkran on 13–15 April adds water fun and crowds.
Should we avoid Thailand in the rainy season with children?
No, but plan for it. Mid-May to mid-October brings showers, green scenery and fewer crowds, along with the dengue peak and rough weather on the Andaman coast. Stay flexible, choose the Gulf side for beaches, and be strict about mosquito protection.
When is the monsoon in Phuket and Krabi?
The Andaman coast is wettest during the southwest monsoon, from May to October. Families who want calm swimming and reliable boat trips usually go from November to April.
When is the rainy season on Koh Samui?
The southern Gulf coast, including Koh Samui, gets its heaviest rain around October to December under the northeast monsoon, and the south can stay wet until about December. That is the opposite of Phuket's pattern.
When are Songkran and Loy Krathong?
Songkran is on 13–15 April (official for 2026; by tradition for 2027). Loy Krathong falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026 and Saturday 13 November 2027.
